|
Epidural steroid injections for the treatment of lumbar radicular pain in patients with herniated intervertebral disc have been used for more than a century. At the time of the initial introduction of this procedure, it was performed on the basis of empirical grounds. Although numerous literatures, which consist mainly of case series published since the mid-twentieth century, its efficacy for the treatment of lumbar radiculopathy has not been confirmed through double-blinded placebo controlled studies as those studies report only the short-term symptomatic cases. Therefore, the primary goal of epidural steroid injections in the treatment of lumbar radiculopathy should be short-term relief of radiating pain. Considering the favorable natural course of the lumbar radiculopathy due to herniated disc and the spontaneous resolution of the herniated disc, lumbar epidural steroid may be a useful procedure to avoid surgical treatment in patients with pain refractory to other conservative management methods.
